Palestinians Threaten to Suspend Ties to US If Forced to Close PLO DC Office

The Palestinian Authority has threatened to suspend communication with the United States if it acts on plans to close the Palestine Liberation Organization’s office in Washington DC.

Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat called the possible closure a ““very unfortunate and unacceptable” decision, and said that Washington was bowing to pressure by the Israeli government “at a time when we are trying to cooperate to achieve the ultimate deal.”

Erekat said in a statement posted on social media that the Palestinians would “put on hold all our communications with this American administration.”

The Trump administration announced on Friday that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ call on the ICC in September to investigate and prosecute Israeli officials for settlement activity and aggression against Palestinians had triggered a U.S. law that could lead to the closure.

The State Department has refused to renew permission for the PLO to operate its Washington office for the first time since in about three decades. The permission to operate in DC must be renewed every six months.

The decision can be overturned if President Donald Trump determines that the Palestinians “have entered into direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel.”

Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in comments published by the Palestinian WAFA news agency that the decision “is unprecedented in the history of US-Palestinian relations, which could have serious consequences on the peace process and US-Arab relations, as well as serves as a blow to peace-making efforts and a reward to Israel, which is working to obstruct the US efforts by persisting with its settlement policy and its refusal to accept the principle of the two-state solution.”

“This is a matter of US law. We respect the decision and look forward to continuing to work with the US to advance peace and security in the region,” said a statement issued Saturday night by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Conditioning the renewal of the waiver on the Palestinians’ sticking to ‘direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel’ is actually superfluous since negotiations are nonexistent, and the current US administration has yet to present any kind of peace initiative,” PLO official Hanan Ashrawi said in a statement.

The Trump administration is working on a U.S. plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace in an effort led by the president’s Jewish son-in-law Jared Kushner, a senior White House advisor, and special negotiator Jason Greenblatt. Details of the plan to be released in the coming months were leaked over the weekend to Israel’s Hadashot news, which cited senior Israelis involved in the ongoing discussions with Trump’s peace team. The White House denied the report.
