Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia has come under fire after a series of past antisemitic posts resurfaced online this week.
Kapadia’s antisemitic posts, which included justification of Hamas’ Oct 7 massacre and comparisons of Israel’s defensive actions in Gaza to Nazi atrocities, first came to light after he was named a patron of The Grierson Trust, a prestigious documentary film charity. The Trust swiftly rescinded the offer over the weekend, citing a “zero tolerance approach to racism of all kinds.”
Join the JBN+ WhatsApp GroupBest known for his critically acclaimed documentary “Amy” about the late Jewish singer Amy Winehouse, Kapadia attempted to backpedal from his antisemitic remarks as the backlash threatened to derail his career.
“I’m mortified by the hurt and offense that some of my retweets have caused,” Kapadia told BBC News. “I now understand that they will be seen by many as antisemitic, or in the case of one, even justifying violence. That was not my intention.”
“Like many, I feel passionate about the fate of the Palestinian & Lebanese people and the suffering they have endured over the years, but I am equally passionate about all anti-racism and condemn all forms of antisemitism,” he added. “I unequivocally apologize for these ill-judged reposts, which were posted in haste with a lack of due consideration.”
However, critics argue that the director’s words ring hollow, given the explicit antisemitic nature of the content he shared. One particularly disturbing repost by Kapadia now deleted account on X reportedly featured a political cartoon depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consuming human flesh amid the bodies of dead children, with the caption “Kosher” emblazoned above the grotesque scene.
As the director scrambles to salvage his reputation, many in the industry are left wondering how someone behind thoughtful biopics like “Senna” and “Diego Maradona” could engage in such blatant hate speech. It remains to be seen if the controversy will cast a shadow over Kapadia’s upcoming film “2073,” set to premiere this week at the BFI London Film Festival.
As all anti-Semites in high positions do once their hatred is brought to light, they back pedal and say how sorry they are and that isn’t what they meant. Screw him. He’s a liar and a bigot
Yes sure he is sorry now, too late for sorry!! His apology is fake and insincere! He remains a vile antisemite!
I don’t like people who hate jewish people 😒 people need to be careful on what they wish for
It seems to me if someone is truly remorseful for the posts they share in heist. There is a remedy for that. Elon Musk showed the way number one before he starts comparing Israelis to Nazis. Let him be escorted on a visit of March of or directly to the Auschwitz concentration camp And Memorial in Israel, so he can see firsthand who the Nazis truly were what their goal of genocide actually means. Secondly, he needs to visit Israel. He needs to experience firsthand what happens when the missiles fall he needs to meet the people and understand how their life has been impacted by years and years and years of attacks of rockets missiles and terrorism, the nova festival site and keyboard scene and see what was done and then he should write about that and if he isn’t properly educated after that or doesn’t want to do that, then he deserves to be written off because then he clearly has no moral authority to produce films
Interesting that he feels “ passionate about the fate of the Palestinian & Lebanese people and the suffering they have endured over the years,” but makes no mention of the suffering and atrocities the Jews have suffered over the years.. hmm
He’s a lowlife, Jew- hating pig! A lying waste of space and oxygen.
He’s sorry he got caught out. That’s all.
He’s sorry he got caught out. That’s all.
Those who bless will be blessed and those
that curse will be cursed. I often wonder that
tge creator of the world must really be saddened
by all evil mankind who hate Israel.
This man is evil personified. He needs to never
Make another movie. He isn’t sorry . It’s all
About the money .
His apology rings hollow and insincere.
Words are clothing for feelings. The Words he uttered in his tweets, before the apology, say more about who he is and how he feels, than those he expressed in his apology.
Nice try Asif but you are not persuasive nor convincing.
Bilich San Sanych was how many times before your TV s also Interesting but there is very
Making money in the back of a Jew: Amy Winehouse and wanting all Jews to die. I have only one wish for this ugly rat and people like him: I wish he could feel in his flesh and in his bones what the Israeli civilians have felt while they were being slaughtered and watching their family and friends being slaughtered, raped and dismembered. Too bad the serial killers in America do not target these scums! I noticed they are never sick, they never have disease only mental. May God erase his name and his posterity.
Does he think we’re stupid? He’s concerned about the suffering of the Arabs in Gaza and Lebanon??? Purposely omitting the barrage of rockets launched at Israel from Lebanon over the past year or the fact that since 2006 Hamas has been firing rockets for years at Israeli towns and cities purposely aiming at civilians. He’s a hypocrite and a lousy liar and I hope this ruins his career.
May he ponder for many years the loss of this opportunity, and how his determination to incite hate was the deciding factor of his downfall.
