Three ISIS inspired terrorist plots aimed at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris were successfully foiled.
According to the French prosecutor’s office, five individuals, including a minor, were arrested in connection with attempting to attack “Israeli institutions or representatives of Israel in Paris” on behalf of the Islamic State. The suspects, now facing various terrorism-related charges, are being held in pretrial detention. Although details of the plots were not disclosed during Wednesday’s court hearing, one of the attacks allegedly intended to target bars near the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne where Olympic soccer events were being held at the time.
With the Olympics held this year against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s war in Ukraine, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin repeatedly warned of a wide range of security threats. Identified risks spanned from Arab extremist groups to violent environmental activists, far-right groups, and cyberattacks from Iran.
As a result, Paris took no chances in implementing unprecedented security procedures. Prior to the opening ceremony in August, the country raised its security alert level to the highest and conducted over 900 preventive house searches. Approximately 45,000 police along with 10,000 soldiers were deployed on a daily basis to secure the games. Israel’s team in particular had been provided 24-hour protection by the Shin Bet and French police.
French authorities also strengthened airspace defenses with warplanes, attack helicopters, while deploying military and police drones to monitor Paris and other host cities. More than 750 drone flight hours across 350 missions were logged, resulting in 90 interceptions.
