In a powerful display of bipartisan unity, House Speaker Mike Johnson led a vigil Monday night on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to honor Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky — two Israeli embassy staffers who were brutally murdered in Washington, D.C. last month in what officials are calling a targeted antisemitic attack.

Flanked by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and dozens of lawmakers from both parties, Speaker Johnson delivered a forceful speech condemning the violence and warning about the alarming rise in antisemitism.

“This attack was targeted, antisemitic terrorism — there are no shades of gray,” Johnson declared. “We must stand up and protect our Jewish brothers and sisters.”

The vigil, organized in coordination with the Israeli Embassy, drew more than 100 attendees, including diplomats, community leaders, and representatives from major Jewish organizations. The crowd gathered not only to remember the victims but to send a clear message: hate-fueled violence will not be ignored.

Johnson spoke of a troubling trend — an increase in antisemitic rhetoric, physical assaults, and acts of intimidation across the country. “It’s a dangerous time to be a Jewish American,” he warned. “We have a duty — moral and constitutional — to confront this hatred head-on.”

The evening also featured emotional tributes to Milgrim and Lischinsky, who were remembered as selfless public servants and proud representatives of the State of Israel.

Johnson closed the vigil with a promise: “We are not just mourning their loss — we are standing together against the hate that took them from us. The Jewish people are not alone.”
