The fall of the Assad regime has unearthed remarkable discoveries, including a 500-year-old Torah scroll found in the basements of the Syrian ruler’s palace and featured today on Syrian media. The scroll is seen as evidence of Syria’s once-thriving ancient Jewish community.

The discovery has prompted calls for Syria to return the Torah scroll to Israel, alongside the remains of Israeli spy Eli Cohen, which have been held in Syria for 60 years.

Cohen, a revered figure in Israel, infiltrated the highest levels of Syrian leadership from 1961 to 1965 before being exposed, sentenced to death, and executed. His espionage work remains a critical chapter in Israeli history, with streets and landmarks across Israel named in his honor.
