Pro-Hamas demonstrations at Brooklyn College escalated into physical confrontations with police on Thursday evening after protesters refused to remove an illegal encampment on campus grounds.

Anti-Israel rhetoric dominated the demonstration, with participants marching to University’s Tanger Hillel House where speakers denounced the building as a “Zionist institution” while others displayed signs declaring “Israel has no right to exist,” and “save Gaza.” Videos from the scene showed protesters, many wearing keffiyehs, shouting profanities at police who were attempting to restore order to the campus.

“Stop shoving people! Stop f–king shoving people!” one female protester could be heard yelling as officers worked to clear the area. “Get the f–k out! Get the f–k out!” another howled.

NYPD officers could be seen detaining several demonstrators who resisted removal from the quad area. By 7:30 p.m., campus officials emailed students announcing immediate closure of the college for safety reasons. Brooklyn College spokesman Richard Pietras later explained that protesters had violated clear campus policies.

“Brooklyn College respects the right to protest while also adhering to strict rules meant to ensure safe operation of our university,” he said in a statement.

Mounting pressure from Trump administration officials has pushed universities nationwide toward swift crackdowns on pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Just one day earlier, Columbia University saw 80 arrests after protesters occupied Butler Library during finals week.
