A group of anti-Israel protesters assembled outside the Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) synagogue in Thornhill, Ontario, prompting a counter-demonstration by Jews and a significant police presence, including York Regional Police’s hate crime unit and counterterrorism officers.
The protest has raised concerns within the Jewish community, particularly given recent statistics highlighting the disproportionate targeting of Jews in hate crimes. According to Statistics Canada, Jews were the leading victims of police-reported hate crimes last year, despite making up less than 1% of Canada’s population. The country is home to approximately 335,000 Jews, compared to 1.8 million Muslims and 694,000 Arab Canadians.
