Anti-Israel protesters escalated their campaign against Cambridge University on Thursday by spraying red paint across the Old Schools building.

Located at the heart of Cambridge on Trinity Lane, the Old Schools has a history stretching back nearly six centuries. Built in 1441, King Henry VI originally created it as the entrance to his new King’s College. When Henry decided he wanted something more impressive, he started construction elsewhere on campus on what would become the university’s famous King’s College Chapel. Today the Old Schools building contains Cambridge’s Endowment Fund office which manages the school’s investments.

For anti-Israel protesters it made a perfect target.

“Each life lost in Palestine is a human being with dreams, loved ones, and a future stolen,” Palestine Action announced after claiming responsibility. “As long as the university continues to profit from violence, we will continue to take action in solidarity with Palestinians who endure daily oppression and destruction.”

Cambridge authorities have since reported the damage to local police and it is being investigated as a criminal act of vandalism. It follows an injunction granted by a High Court on Thursday aimed at preventing pro-Hamas demonstrators on campuses. Last week, Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government building was defaced with “DROP ELBIT” over the university’s ties with leading Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.
