“Representative Ocasio-Cortez has made expenditures from her official office account that she herself contends should have been reported to the FEC, presumably because they were made for campaign purposes,” the group wrote in a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics.
“Americans for Public Trust respectfully requests that the OCE undertake an investigation to determine the extent to which Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has engaged in prohibited conduct— and pursue any and all penalties which may be warranted and available.”
Americans for Public Trust Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland was blunt about what her organization sees as financial misconduct.
“Representative Ocasio-Cortez’s troubling payments from her taxpayer funded account for activities such as dance classes should be investigated,” she tells The National. “In the era of reining in government spending, the American people deserve to know lawmakers are being good stewards of their tax dollars.”
AOC wasted no time rejecting the allegations through a terse statement on social media.
“100% wrong,” she wrote. “None of this is taxpayer money, this is an FEC filing. Be loud and wrong about something else. Try again next time.”
This isn’t AOC’s first time to be hit with an ethics complaint. In 2023 she faced an inquiry after accepting free tickets to the Met Gala valued at approximately $35,000. She notably wore a dress to that event which read “Tax the Rich.”
