An armed individual was shot dead near the Israeli Consulate in Munich on Thursday.

Initial reports suggest that Munich police were forced to shoot an armed suspect who had been roaming near the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism in the Karolinenlatz area. The suspect was wounded in the shootout and later died from his injuries. No other casualties have been reported.

While no terror group has claimed responsibility, the timing of this attack coincided with the 52nd anniversary of the Munich Olympics Massacre raises alarming questions about possible motives.

As dawn broke on September 5, 1972, eight members of the notorious Black September terrorist organization stormed an Olympic Village housing the Israeli team. They immediately killed wrestling coach Moshe Weinberg and weightlifter Yossef Romano. The remaining nine Israeli team members were taken hostage.

Seeking leverage, the terrorists demanded Israel to release 234 dangerous Arabs from prison, as well as two German terrorists. Negotiations continued throughout the day, with the hostage crisis playing out on live television worldwide. A poorly executed rescue attempt by German law enforcement prompted the terrorists to murder their remaining nine captives.
