Antisemitic supermodel Bella Hadid found herself embroiled in controversy after being chosen to represent Adidas for the Paris Olympics.

For this year’s games, Adidas relaunched their iconic SL 72 sneaker, which was originally worn by athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Sadly, those games weren’t remembered for athletic achievement, but rather for the Arab massacre of 11 Israeli coaches and athletes. Although Adidas made no explicit mention of the bloodbath in its campaign, its timing and Hadid’s involvement sparked global outrage.

Leading Jewish advocacy groups questioned how a vocal antisemite could represent a shoe associated with such a terrible tragedy. Hadid has a long history of making inflammatory anti-Israel statements. She has taken part in several pro-Hamas demonstrations and often described Israel’s defensive actions as a “genocide.”

The severe backlash led the German sportswear giant to part ways with Hadid and sever ties with other antisemitic celebrities such as A$AP Nast and Jules Koundé.

Hadid took to Instagram on Monday to plead ignorance, stating she would have protested the campaign had she been aware of its historical connections.

“In advance of the campaign’s release, I had no knowledge of the historical connection to the atrocious events in 1972. As I always have, and always will, I speak up for what I believe to be wrong,” Hadid wrote.

“I am shocked, I am upset, and I am disappointed in the lack of sensitivity that went into this campaign. Had I been made aware, from the bottom of my heart, I would never have participated.”

Hadid, who identifies as a proud Palestinian woman, also addressed the broader context of the controversy. She condemned any connection between the “liberation of the Palestinian people” and antisemitism, stating that “Palestine is not synonymous with terrorism.”

“I will always stand for peace over violence, any day. Hate has no place here, and I will forever advocate for not only my people but every person worldwide.”

Adidas, whose founders were members of the Nazi party, has announced plans to revise their campaign in an attempt to mitigate further public relations damage.
