A Holocaust memorial in Berlin known as the “Block of Women” was found vandalized with antisemitic graffiti on Thursday.

According to the Juedische Allgemeine, a tour guide discovered the vandalism which read ‘Jews are committing genocide’ and ‘Free Palestine’ in English. A Palestinian flag was also sprayed on the ground below the memorial.

‘This monument honors the courageous women who, in 1943, protested against the Nazi persecution of their Jewish husbands,’ the European Jewish Congress said in a statement. ‘This outrageous disrespect of Shoah victims doesn’t advance the Palestinian cause. It is simply unacceptable.’

Berlin’s “Block of Women” was designed by German Jewish artist Ingeborg Hunzinger and erected in 1995. It commemorates the non-Jewish women who publicly protested against the Nazis in 1943 when their Jewish husbands and fathers faced deportation.

At the time, Jews in mixed marriages weren’t yet slated for annihilation over fear of alienating their non-Jewish relatives. Over 100 women participated in the week-long protest in Berlin’s Rosenstrasse neighborhood, resulting in the temporary release of approximately 2,000 detained Jewish men.

‘The strength of civil disobedience; the vigor of love; overcomes the violence of dictatorship; Give us our men back; Women were standing here; defeating death; Jewish men were free,’ an inscription on the monument reads.

Germany’s State Security Police agency has launched an investigation into this shameful incident.
