Peruvian authorities have found the body of a 26-year-old Israeli tourist after a nearly month-long search.
As per La Republica, Oren Zamir had traveled to Peru to volunteer with a local non-profit and explore the Andean landscapes. He was last seen by fellow hikers on April 14 during a trek in the Bolognesi province.
The National Police of Peru (PNP) began the search for Zamir in the areas where he had begun his trek, particularly in the Queropalca and Rasac glacier regions. These areas are notorious for their lack of cell reception, and Zamir had reportedly informed his family that he would be unreachable throughout his journey. When Zamir failed to return as planned, an Israeli search mission was dispatched to collaborate with the PNP in an effort to locate him. His father and uncle had already arrived in Peru shortly beforehand, holding out hope of finding him alive.
After weeks of searching, Zamir was eventually discovered dead at the base of a mountain in the Huayhuash region on Sunday. Peruvian authorities suspect no foul play in the tragic death of the young man, and preparations are underway to repatriate his remains to Israel for a proper burial, according to the report.
