A London-bound Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s international airport on Thursday, sending thick black smoke billowing over a residential neighborhood as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Flight AI171, operated by a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, departed at 1:39 p.m. local time from runway 23 en route to London’s Gatwick Airport when disaster struck. According to the Associated Press, the aircraft gave a “Mayday” call, signaling an emergency, but thereafter there was no response from the aircraft before crashing and bursting into flames.

Passengers from multiple countries were aboard the ill-fated flight, including 169 from India, 43 from Britain, seven from Portugal, and one from Canada. Of the total occupants, 217 were adults while 11 were children, in addition to the flight crew.
Air India, once state-owned but now under the Tata Group conglomerate, has been working to modernize its fleet and operations since the 2022 takeover. The airline issued a brief statement acknowledging the tragedy.
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details,” Air India wrote on X.
All relevant agencies are on high alert and coordinated efforts were underway, according to the aviation minister’s office. The last fatal plane crash in India was in 2020 and involved Air India Express, the airline’s low-cost arm, when a Boeing-737 overshot a runway in Kerala, killing 21 people.
Officials have not yet released casualty figures.
