Canada’s parliament is set to vote on a motion by the New Democratic Party (NDP), which calls for the government to officially recognize a Palestinian state.
The House of Commons is scheduled to vote on the motion on Monday, which calls for an end to the “decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories,” an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and an arms embargo against Israel.
Join the JBN+ WhatsApp GroupLiberal MP Anthony Housefather took to social media on Sunday to protest the motion, arguing that it gives Hamas what exactly it wants.
“The NDP has a motion that it pitches as a call for a ceasefire. It does so without demanding Hamas surrender and no longer rule Gaza. it also calls for a litany of other things hostile to Israel. Changing foreign policy to reward a terrorist attack. Not smart,” Housefather wrote on X.
The vote is seen as a test for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who initially showed support for Israel following the Oct. 7 massacre, saying he “unequivocally condemned Hamas’ large-scale attacks against Israel and expressed his deep condolences to Prime Minister Netanyahu for the hundreds of lives lost.” His tune changed shortly after he accused Israel of “killing women, children, and babies” in the Gaza Strip.
