A proposed bill in Israel’s Knesset seeks to prohibit Jews from ascending the Temple Mount.
Behind this unexpected initiative is an unlikely alliance between Opposition Leader Yair Lapid of the Yesh Atid party and Shas Party Chairman Aryeh Deri. The two politicians, who have been rivals for a decade, have reportedly engaged in discussions to jointly promote the bill. According to Channel 12 News, Deri has agreed to support Lapid’s proposal after Security Minister Ben Gvir drew heavy condemnation for ascending the Temple Mount yesterday on Tisha B’Av.
Beyond its status as a flashpoint for Israeli-Arab tensions, the Temple Mount carries profound religious significance that further complicates the issue. This sacred ground is believed to be where Avraham Avinu nearly sacrificed his son, where King Shlomo built the First Temple, and was home to G-d’s presence before the Second Temple was destroyed 2,000 years ago.
Many Orthodox rabbis prohibit ascending the Temple Mount due to concerns about ritual purity and the uncertain location of the Holy of Holies. They argue that Jews should refrain from visiting until the coming of Mashiach and the rebuilding of the Third Temple. Conversely, a growing movement within Orthodox Judaism advocates for Jewish presence on the holy site, viewing it as a fulfillment of religious obligations and an assertion of Jewish connection to their ancient homeland.
Despite only being announced yesterday, the proposed bill has already drawn ire from fellow politicians.
“Even a joint vote by the Knesset members of Shas and Yesh Atid together will not turn this great mitzvah into a prohibition, Likud MK Amit Halevi said. “There is no Rabbi, including Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who thinks that those who go up to the areas built by Herod on the Temple Mount and pray there violate any prohibition, and therefore he also allowed individuals to ascend as permitted by Jewish law.”
If passed when the Knesset reconvenes after the summer, it would mark the first time in Israel’s history that Jews would be permanently barred from the holiest place on earth.
As the very respectable Rabbi Moshe Tendler( son in law of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein) said – this is not a halachic decision but rather a political one. The question is who does not want Jews to have freedom of religion at Judaism’s holiest site???. Is it Abdallah or Bibi or maybe both? Maybe the US and globalists that want one world religion?? This was bought by King David from Aravna the Jebusite and documented in the Tanach. This is ours exclusively- get them away!
It is up to each individual Jew if they want to go up to the Temple Mount. To actually make a law tells the world we have no right to the Temple Mount. Shame on all of them. THIS CAN NOT EVER BE ALLOWED To PASS
Constant capitulation will not bring peace and these Traitors backstab their own people or at least attempting to. Don’t see how it will pass. Jews need more rights, not less!
