A former Cornell University student has been sentenced to prison for making violent threats against Jewish students ar the university.
Patrick Dai, once a junior at the prestigious Ivy League school, was arrested in October for posting antisemitic threats online. In one disturbing post, he threatened to shoot up the “Jewish pigs” at Cornell’s kosher dining hall. In another, Dai swore to slit the throat of any Jewish male student while throwing the females off a cliff.
Responding to Dai’s antisemitic threats, Cornell University increased patrols and security measures for its Jewish students and organizations. New York State Police also bolstered their presence on campus thanks to the efforts of Governor Kathy Hochul.
On Tuesday, Dai received a 21-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. However, Defense Attorney Lisa Peebles felt the sentencing was too strict based on her client’s mental health issues. The 22-year-old had been taking medications for depression a few months before his online tirade and is also on the autism spectrum.
“We were obviously disappointed because we were seeking a sentence of time served, since he’s got close to 10 months in already,” Peebles told CNN. “He believed, wrongly, that the posts would prompt a ‘blowback’ against what he perceived as anti-Israel media coverage and pro-Hamas sentiment on campus.”
According to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents in the United States surged by nearly 400% in the days following Hamas’ October 7 massacre on Israel.
So the lawyer wants us to believe that he thought that he would get people to stop posting anti-Israel rhetoric…by posting anti-Israel rhetoric? If that was the basis of their defense, it should be declared a mistrial, on the basis of the fact that his lawyer was incompetent.
Anyone making racist threats towards any group should be locked up. Let’s hope he comes out a better man
