The United Nations descent into irrelevance and detachment from its founding principles was on full display on Thursday during its memorial ceremony for former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
The only representatives who spoke about the fallen tyrant were from African, Asian-Pacific, and Caribbean regional groups, showing the broader lack of support for Raisi. How a body that professes to champion human rights could venerate such a monster defies comprehension, as Raisi’s bloody humanitarian record is extensive and undeniable.

According to the Associated Press, the General Assembly Hall hosting the ceremony honoring the “Butcher of Tehran” was almost entirely empty after most countries boycotted the loathsome event.
Raisi was a key member of the Iranian regime’s notorious “Death Committees” that extra-judicially executed up to 5,000 political prisoners in 1988 alone. His reign as president saw security forces ruthlessly crush nationwide protests, killing over 500 civilians and arresting 22,000 more. Dozens lost eyes and limbs from gunfire at close range under Raisi’s orders.
Prior to the UN’s sickening capitulation to honor this murderous tyrant, 45 human rights groups and former prosecutors desperately pleaded with spineless Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to cancel paying tribute to one so brazenly complicit in mass atrocities.
Meanwhile, supporters of the Iranian opposition took to the streets outside the UN’s New York headquarters, hoisting banners that read “Shame on the UN for honoring Raisi, the Butcher of Tehran.”
Their pleas obviously fell on deaf ears.
