A political cartoon suggesting Rep. Rashida Tlaib has ties to Hezbollah is drawing widespread outrage.

Published by the National Review, a caricature of Tlaib is depicted at her desk next to a small explosion, uttering, “Odd. My pager just exploded.” The cartoon’s creator, Henry Payne, reportedly works as an automotive industry reporter for the Detroit News. He also shared the cartoon on his personal X account with the caption “Tlaib Pager Hamas.”

Payne’s cartoon comes as thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon detonated on Tuesday. A day later, hand-held radios also exploded, resulting in dozens of Hezbollah fatalities and thousands of injuries. Lebanese security sources have pointed to the Mossad as the culprit, though Israel has not officially claimed responsibility.

For her part, Tlaib took to X to denounce Payne’s racist cartoon.

“Our community is already in so much pain right now,” Tlaib wrote. “This racism will incite more hate + violence against our Arab & Muslim communities, and it makes everyone less safe. It’s disgraceful that the media continues to normalize this racism.”

Other leading Michigan politicians also denounced Payne’s offensive cartoon, with Michigan Mayor Abdullah Hammoud saying, “Absolutely disgusting. Anti-Arab bigotry & Islamophobia have become normalized in our media.”

“Vile. Racist. Islamophobic trash,” outgoing Rep. Cori Bush wrote on X. “National Review, you should be ashamed for spewing this filth, betraying any shred of journalistic integrity, and putting communities in danger. You chose hate over truth. You’ve failed your readers and your community.”

Tlaib has long condemned Israel’s defensive actions in Gaza as well as opposed US support for its closest ally in the Middle East. In November, the House of Representatives voted to formally censure Tlaib over her antisemitic rhetoric on the Israel-Hamas war, making her the second Arab-American woman in Congress to face official censure for criticizing Israel. Earlier in the year, Rep. Ilhan Omar was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee for similar disparaging comments.
