Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein is actively recruiting a Muslim as her running mate.

According to NBC, Stein has reached out to several well-known Arab American figures. Under consideration is Rutgers Professor Noura Erakat, who expressed her disappointment when Democratic nominee Kamala Harris shut down anti-Israel protesters in Detroit on Wednesday after they disrupted her speech.

About halfway through the vice president’s remarks, pro-Hamas sympathizers yelled, “Kamala, Kamala you can’t hide! We won’t vote for genocide.” In response, Harris said “You know what? If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that. Otherwise, I’m speaking,” and had them escorted out.

“To tell the base that she’s come here to win over that they need to shut up was awful,” Erakat told NBC. “She went in there and offered them nothing but bullying.”

Abed Ayoub, executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), also confirmed multiple conversations with Stein about joining her ticket.

“It’s an honor to be considered for the position and something that I strongly considered and weighed heavily,” said Ayoub. “It’s not that Jill Stein is coming in to, quote-unquote, steal votes. She’s coming in to earn votes. Is it the politically smart thing to do? Obviously.”

The former doctor’s strategy appears to be a direct response to growing frustrations within Arab communities regarding the Democratic Party’s flip-flop stance on the ongoing Gaza war. Despite polling at 1.3% nationally, Stein appears to be gaining traction among Arab American voters. A recent survey conducted by the ADC showed Stein leading with 45% support among its members, compared to just 27% for Harris.

Stein made headlines in April after she participated in a violent anti-Israel protest at Washington University. She was arrested along with 100 other individuals and was reportedly charged with assaulting a police officer.
