A new series of polls suggests that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is pulling ahead of Republican rival Donald Trump with less than two months left to the presidential elections.
With last week’s debate still fresh on voters’ minds, a CNN poll found that 63% of viewers believed Harris emerged victorious, compared to 37% for Trump. Morning Consult’s poll of 3,317 likely voters gave Harris a 5-point lead, with 50% support compared to Trump’s 45%. Similarly, an Ipsos survey for Reuters showed Harris ahead by 5 points, 47% to 42%.
YouGov’s poll for Yahoo News revealed a 5-point advantage for Harris, marking a notable improvement from their previous survey in August, which showed only a 1-point lead for the vice president. Other polls, including those conducted by RMG Research, Leger, and Redfield & Wilton Strategies, also indicated leads for Harris ranging from 2 to 4 percentage points.
While these results are certainly encouraging for the Harris campaign, political analysts caution that the race remains tight, with several polls falling within the margin of error. Furthermore, as the 2016 election demonstrated, a lead in the popular vote does not guarantee an Electoral College victory.
Trump and Harris sparred on a number of hot-button issues on Tuesday, such as abortion, immigration, and campaign rally attendance. As for American Jewish voters whose hearts are with their brethren in Israel, all eyes were on how Harris would handle the war in Gaza. Much like her boss, she took a measured approach by acknowledging Israel’s right to defend itself while still pushing for a two-state solution. Trump, on the other hand, accused Harris of “hating Israel” and asserted that had he remained in office, Hamas’ massacre against Israel on October 7 would never had happened.
Although both candidates were tied in the polls leading up to the debate, pollsters suggest the vice president’s performance against the former president came out victorious, in which she repeatedly baited him and knocked him off balance. It gave Democrats the role reversal they had hoped for after President Joe Biden’s disastrous performance in the first debate.
Heaven help us all if Kamala wins!
