Israel’s defensive war against Hezbollah might soon be coming to an end.

Ali Hassan Khalil, a top aide to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, revealed to Reuters that Hezbollah has formally delivered its written response to the U.S. ambassador, with White House envoy Amos Hochstein scheduled to arrive in Beirut on Wednesday to advance the talks.

Significantly, Khalil said the response was delivered in a “positive atmosphere,” though he warned that if Israel “doesn’t want a solution, it could make 100 problems.” He also described the effort as the “most serious yet to end to the fighting” and some “comments” have been made to the agreement,

A leaked draft of the US proposal calls for full implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates that Hezbollah maintain no armed presence in the territory between the Lebanese-Israeli border and the Litani River. Despite clear evidence of the terror group’s entrenchment along the border in violation of U.N. requirements since 2006, Hezbollah officials have instead focused on condemning Israeli defense operations in their airspace.

Since launching its offensive against Hezbollah’s near-daily attacks two months ago, the IDF has dealt significant blows to the Iranian-backed terror organization, targeting its leadership ranks and severely depleting its missile arsenal.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Netanyahu is rejecting any notion of letting Hezbollah off the hook, vowing to maintain military pressure on the terror organization even if temporary diplomatic arrangements are reached.

“The most important thing is not the deal that will be laid on paper. Even if there is a paper setting out an agreement, worthy though it may be, we will be required, in order to ensure our security in the north of Israel, to systematically carry out operations — not only against Hezbollah’s attacks, which could come,” Netanyahu told the Knesset on Monday.

“Even if there is a ceasefire, nobody can guarantee it will hold. So it’s not only our reaction, a preventive reaction, a reaction in the wake of attack, but also the capacity to prevent Hezbollah from strengthening. We will not allow Hezbollah to return to the state it was.”
