Ohio drivers heading home for Chanukkah will encounter something unexpected along the highways – a groundbreaking campaign fighting antisemitism on a scale the state has never seen before.”

Between exits and overpasses, massive hot pink billboards are catching drivers’ eyes with messages like “Can a billboard end antisemitism? No. But you’re not a billboard.” and “Standing against antisemitism is standing with America.”

Designed by the NGO JewBelong in partnership with Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, five such billboards will remain up through Feb. 23 at several Ohio locations, including: I-680 & Meridian Road, RT 224 & Lockwood Avenue, 5990 Youngstown-Warren Road, I-680 & Bellevista Avenue, and I-76 & OH State Line.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, the Buckeye State has seen a 289% increase in antisemitic incidents since Hamas launched its devastating massacre against Israel 14 months ago.

In one particularly disturbing incident, eleven masked neo-Nazis marched down 1st Avenue and North High Street last month in downtown Columbus. The group, carrying flags emblazoned with swastikas, shouted antisemitic messages and white power chants over a microphone. Police were quickly dispatched after receiving reports that some of them were armed, though no arrests were made.

“It’s a scary time to be Jewish,” says JewBelong co-founder Archie Gottesman. “We are up against some of the worst antisemitism of our lifetime. It’s outrageous and wouldn’t be tolerated if it was another marginalized community being treated like this. The Jewish community is only 2% of the entire country so we need to work extra hard to break through to the wider American public.”

While Ohio drivers encounter these powerful messages on their daily commute, travelers at major airports across the country are also stopping in their tracks to read “If you think turbulence is scary, try wearing a Jewish star.”
