The Israel Defense Forces have disclosed that Israeli commandos recently conducted a raid in southern Syria, leading to the capture of a Syrian man suspected of conducting border surveillance for Iran. The operation was executed in recent months by the Egoz commando unit in collaboration with field interrogators from the Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 504.

The apprehended individual, identified as Ali Suleiman al-Asi, is a resident of Saida, a village in Syria’s Daraa Governorate. According to the IDF, al-Asi was working on behalf of Iran, gathering intelligence on Israeli military operations along the Syrian border to facilitate potential future terrorist activities. The military had been “closely monitoring” him prior to his capture and subsequent transfer to Israel for questioning.

The IDF stated that al-Asi’s arrest “prevented and disrupted a future attack and led to the exposure of the modus operandi of Iranian entities on the Golan Heights front.” They released footage from his interrogation, in which al-Asi recounted being approached by an individual who told him, “Your area is good, strategic, we can get something from this.” He noted that this person was “linked to Iran.”
