0 commentsIran has ramped up its crusade against women’s reproductive rights, implementing a nationwide network of anti-abortion centers.
Iranian health officials recently unveiled the existence of 250 anti-abortion facilities across the country, operating under the innocuous-sounding name “Nafas” or “Breath.” These centers, far from providing neutral health services, claim to have prevented 4,700 abortions through intervention and persuasion tactics.
Join the JBN+ WhatsApp Group“In some instances, the mother may not disclose her intention to abort. Instead, the child’s father, relatives, or even neighbors might inform us,” Health Ministry Director Jabbari-Farouji told Iran’s Labor News Agency.
“These groups then establish an emotional connection with the mother, investigating the issues she faces. Based on these identified problems, they advise her against terminating the pregnancy.”
Backed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to help enforce, the Nafas program represents a significant escalation in Iran’s already draconian reproductive policies. It follows a 2021 law that banned public health services from offering family planning resources except in rare cases determined by Iran’s fanatical clergy.
According to Amnesty International, violators face financial sanctions, imprisonment, and revocation of medical practice rights. Yet, faced with few alternatives, many women turn to risky backstreet procedures to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Unfortunately, many women die or end up with lifelong medical complications during these unsafe procedures.
In May, sixteen human rights agencies called for the repeal of Iran’s discriminatory reproductive laws.
“Under the guise of addressing declining population growth, the government has introduced discriminatory legislation that severely limits access to essential sexual and reproductive healthcare and family planning services. These measures criminalize healthcare providers and strip women of bodily autonomy, perpetuating systemic discrimination,” the joint statement reads.
