Iran’s nuclear ambitions are reaching alarming heights as it continues to enrich uranium to near weapons-grade levels.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium has ballooned to over 30 times the agreed-upon limit in the deeply flawed 2015 nuclear deal. As of mid-May, the report states, Iran possessed 142.1 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60% purity – an alarming 20% increase since February alone.
Even more distressing, the Biden administration has reportedly been imploring France, Britain, and other European allies to look the other way, stymieing their efforts to sanction Iran’s provocations at an upcoming IAEA board meeting next month.
The White House’s desperation to revive former President Barack Obama’s failed nuclear deal at any cost has hamstrung its own leverage. Under that deeply flawed agreement made by Biden’s boss, Iran was permitted to enrich uranium to 3.67% purity while capping its stockpile at 300 kilograms using basic centrifuges. Today, those restrictions lie in absolute tatters as Iran’s breakout timeline for nuclear capability grows by the month, according to the Washington Post.
For the free nations still deluding themselves over the merits of another toothless nuclear deal, the IAEA’s latest findings should serve as a deafening wake-up call. Reinstating the agreement would merely grant Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei international legitimacy. The only real solution is to abandon misguided appeasement in favor of overwhelming economic and political sanctions targeting the entire Islamic regime.
