Iran is launching a surprise missile attack against Israel, prompting authorities to order the entire civilian population into bomb shelters.
In a statment, the IDF announced, “A short while ago, missiles were launched from Iran towards the State of Israel. You are instructed to remain alert and precisely follow the Home Front Command’s instructions.”
The IDF also stated on social media that “all Israeli civilians” are taking shelter from the attack.
IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari urged Israelis to stay vigilant, saying, “The air-defense system is fully operational, detecting and intercepting threats wherever necessary, even at this moment. However, the defense is not hermetic.”
While the full scope of the attack is still unclear, Israeli media reports suggest Iran has fired over 100 missiles. The attack may involve various types of weaponry, including drones and missiles, according to sources cited by The New York Times.
The targets are believed to include three Israeli Air Force bases and an IDF military intelligence headquarters near Tel Aviv. It follows Iran’s first direct assault on Israeli territory in April, which involved approximately 300 missiles and drones. Iran claimed that attack was in retaliation for a strike that killed a high-ranking Iranian general in Damascus.
