France’s rail network was sabotaged just hours before the Olympic Opening Ceremony kicked off in Paris.

French state railway company SNCF first reported widespread disruptions across its high-speed rail network early on Friday morning. By midday, SNCF CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou revealed that cables crucial for train drivers safety had been deliberately set on fire and dismantled.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo confirmed that the attacks were indeed coordinated and labeled them as sabotage but didn’t think it would disrupt the games.

‘What happened is unacceptable, but it will have no impact on the ceremony tonight because it has no consequences on the transport network of the Île-de-France region,’ she told the press.

Unfortunately, she was dead wrong.

Up to 800,000 passengers are expected to face disruptions over the weekend, with an estimated 250,000 affected on Friday alone. Among those were Olympic athletes, with two out of four dedicated trains carrying them unable to operate.

Several French media outlets reportedly received an email from an extremist group claiming responsibility for the attacks. The group, calling itself an “unknown delegation,” expressed opposition to the Olympics, viewing it as a “celebration of nationalism.”

“They call it a party? We see it as a celebration of nationalism, a gigantic staging of the subjugation of populations by states,” the email reads, as per Le Parisien.

However, authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of this claim.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz placed the blame on Iran, whose sole mission is to cause chaos in the world.

“There are those who seek to undermine the celebratory nature of this joyous event,” Katz wrote on X. “We currently have assessments regarding the potential threat posed by Iranian terrorist proxies and other terrorist organizations.””
