Major international airlines are grounding flights to Israel due to fears of an Iranian attack following the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Thousands of travelers were left scrambling when industry giants United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and British Airways announced the suspension of their flights to Tel Aviv on Wednesday. United Airlines specifically stated that its Newark to Tel Aviv route would be halted indefinitely.

By Thursday, the list of airlines withdrawing from Israeli airspace had grown significantly. German carrier Lufthansa and UAE-based Fly Dubai joined the suspension. Air India, which is the sole foreign operator connecting Israel to East Asia, also grounded its flights.

A Lufthansa flight from Munich to Tel Aviv was unexpectedly grounded in Cyprus, leaving passengers in limbo. An Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Ben Gurion Airport was also forced to turn back mid-journey over regional safety concerns.

Amidst the chaos, some carriers are holding steady. Budget airlines Wizz Air and Ryanair continue to operate their scheduled flights, though they’re closely monitoring the developing situation. In an attempt to bring Israelis home, El Al has added additional flights from Athens, which would serve as a close and affordable connecting hub.

Meanwhile, the Israeli National Security Council is calling on Israeli expats to take extra caution, advising them to avoid openly displaying signs of Jewish identity if necessary.

“The council recommends seriously reconsidering the necessity of traveling to countries for which travel alerts have been issued with moderate and high threat levels. Remain alert in public places, avoid openly displaying signs of your Israeli or Jewish identity, avoid large events that are not secured by local authorities, and stay away from demonstrations and protests,” the council wrote.
