Mashal led the Hamas Political Bureau from 1996 to May 2017, when he let Ismail Haniyeh succeed him and moved to Qatar, Haniyeh’s shortly followed him. After Haniyeh’s death, Mashal could have reclaimed the top spot but passed it on to Sinwar, likely to avoid being targeted while protecting his $5 billion fortune, allegedly embezzled from Gaza.
Mashal’s half-brother, Mufid Abdulqader, a former Dallas Public Works and Transportation Department engineer, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in the U.S. for funding Hamas through the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development.
