An Israeli hacking group has claimed responsibility for a widespread attack on Iran’s internet infrastructure.
According to The Jerusalem Post, thousands of Iranian WiFi networks were targeted late Thursday evening. Social media quickly lit up with accounts from Iranian citizens describing internet blackouts in various parts of Tehran and beyond.
Prior to the outage, the Israeli hacking group known as WeRedEvils took to Telegram with a stark warning, saying: “In the next few minutes we will attack systems and internet providers in Iran.” As dawn broke on Friday, the cyber-hackers returned to Telegram boasting of their success.
“We successfully broke into the Iranian communications system and collected a lot of information that was passed on to the security forces in Israel,” WeRedEvils claimed. They also directly addressed supporters of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, challenging them to “stop raising red flags and start raising a white flag.”
This isn’t WeRedEvils first time targeting Iranian infrastructure. In 2023, the cyber group claimed credit for an attack on Iran’s electricity grid.
“We managed to get our hands on vital and sensitive software that we will not go into detail about here, we are sure that Iran already understands the extent of the damage it currently has. As we know and have seen in the past such rigs and reactors in certain cases can cause mass destruction in the event of internal leaks or overheating,” WeRedEvils wrote on its Telegram channel at the time.
The timing of this cyber attack is particularly noteworthy, coming just days after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Initially reported as a missile strike, recent investigations suggest a more covert operation involving an explosive device smuggled into the Tehran guesthouse where Haniyeh was staying.
