Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s attendance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris has been marred by death threats and safety concerns.

Herzog’s arrival in France on Wednesday was immediately met with complications when his plane was grounded for 40 minutes at Charles de Gaulle Airport due to an unspecified security concern. Reports suggest a suspicious individual was spotted on a nearby rooftop as the president’s aircraft touched down.

The situation escalated further when French authorities arrested a 15-year-old boy on Saturday for making online threats against Herzog.  However, given the teenager’s lack of a criminal record, prosecutors have ordered him to undergo a mandatory citizenship course. This one-month course aims to remind attendees of peaceful values and tolerance, according to Le Parisien.

Before departing on Sunday, Herzog emphasized the importance of Israel’s presence at the Olympics even during dangerous times.

“At this time, it is especially important for the State of Israel to take our place resolutely and appear on every global stage, particularly on such an important stage as the Olympics,” Herzog said.

“I have a lot of faith in the entire security infrastructure, both of the French, and of other countries that are here, as well as of the International Olympic Committee, which put in immense efforts to secure the event.”

In response to a global increase in hostility and death threats, Israel’s National Security Council has issued travel warnings to citizens planning to attend the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“International events like these tend to be desirable targets for threats and attacks by terrorist groups, given the considerable media attention that a successful terrorist attack at an Olympic event would receive,” the National Security Council said in a statement.
