Israeli special forces have begun targeted operations in Lebanon ahead of an anticipated larger ground invasion.
According to The Telegraph, citing an Israeli military source, elite troops began conducting raids focused on Hezbollah infrastructure, including weapons sites and command centers. These operations appear aimed at pushing Hezbollah forces away from Israel’s northern frontier to allow roughly 60,000 displaced Israelis to return home.
Further details have emerged from The Wall Street Journal, which reports that Israeli commandos are now operating within Hezbollah’s network of underground tunnels. Much like Hamas, these underground facilities have long been a crucial component of Hezbollah’s terror strategy, allowing for covert movement and surprise attacks.
The temperature on Israel’s northern front has been red hot since the assassination of Hezbollah’s longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah on Friday. Hezbollah has since confirmed Nasrallah’s death and his body has been recovered along with 20 other senior terrorists.
Nasrallah’s underground facility was nestled beneath residential structures, in close proximity to a UN-operated school. In order to penetrate the facility, Israeli Air Force F-15I fighters had to drop a large number of bunker-busting bombs on the subterranean headquarters in Beirut’s Dahiyeh suburb.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces are bolstering their presence along the Lebanese border with media reports suggesting a possible invasion as soon as this week.
