In an attempt to uncover the motives behind the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the FBI used Israeli tech to break into the shooter’s cell phone.

This past Saturday, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Using an assault rifle legally purchased by his father over a decade ago, he unleashed a hail of bullets that killed one person, critically injured two others, and grazed the Republican candidate’s right ear. The rampage was brought to an abrupt end when a quick-thinking Secret Service sniper neutralized Crooks on the spot.

Following the shooting, investigators reportedly faced difficulties in accessing data from Crooks’ cell phone, a relatively new model equipped with the latest security software.

Determined to uncover Crooks’s motives, the FBI turned to cutting-edge Israeli technology. They enlisted the help of Cellebrite, an Israeli company specializing in digital investigation. Their controversial software retrieves, analyzes, and organizes phone data, creating documentation suitable for use as evidence in legal proceedings.

According to the Washington Post, Cellebrite’s advanced technology broke into Crooks’s phone in just 40 minutes, a task that experts believed could have taken “hours, weeks or even months” to complete. Despite the swift breakthrough, investigators found no evidence on the phone revealing any motivation for the attempted assassination.

The report suggests that Crooks exhibited no obvious warning signs. Local residents portrayed him as an ordinary youth, with one neighbor noting his friendly demeanor during walks. His school counselor described Crooks as “well-spoken” and “intelligent” while refuting claims of bullying.

No evidence has emerged to suggest Crooks’ parents were negligent, despite their professional backgrounds as licensed social workers. Friends described them as loving and caring parents who may not have been aware of all aspects of their son’s personal life.
