0 commentsVice President Kamala Harris’s campaign’s embrace of an Arab lobbyist group has stoked fears among Jewish Democrats.
Over the weekend, the Black Muslim Leadership Council Fund (BMLC) announced its full-throated support for Harris. Although BMLC previously declared itself uncommitted when President Joe Biden led the ticket, the group’s founder Salima Suswel believes Harris has shown more sympathy towards Gaza.
“During Prime Minister Netanyahu’s address to Congress, Harris decided not to attend. She has repeatedly called for a cease-fire, and I believe she has also expressed empathy towards civilian life and has been very caring as it relates to getting aid to the people of Gaza,” Suswel told NBC News.
Considered to be the first uncommitted Muslim group to back Harris, BMLC’s endorsement comes with clear expectations that critics argue could benefit Hamas. These include pushing for a permanent ceasefire without preconditions and supporting the rebuilding of Gaza with no Israeli oversight.
Rather than rejecting support from such an extremist lobbying group, the expected Democratic Nominee openly embraced it.
“We’re grateful to BMLC for their support. The Vice President is committed to combating Islamophobia wherever it exists and advancing opportunity for Black Americans,” a spokesperson for Harris said. “We look forward to working with BMLC to win this November and defeat Donald Trump’s divisive, unpopular agenda.”
Just days after she launched her presidential campaign, Harris has been critical of Israel’s defensive war against Hamas. In addition to skipping Netanyahu’s address, Harris expressed concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza during her private meeting with Israel’s premier last month.
“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating. The images of dead children and desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time,” Harris told the press at the time. “We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to suffering. And I will not be silent.”
