On a quiet Shabbat morning, a Jewish man was brutally shot on his way to synagogue in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood, sparking outrage in the local Jewish community.

The incident occurred around 9:35 a.m. on the 2600 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, when an unknown man approached the victim from behind and shot him in the shoulder without warning. The bullet passed clean through the victim’s shoulder, causing a soft tissue injury. Emergency services arrived shortly after, treating the injured man, who was promptly transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, he was later released, but the horror of what followed has left the city shaken.

Just 20 minutes after the initial shooting, as police and paramedics were attending to the Jewish victim, the suspect reemerged from a nearby alley. Shouting “Allahu Akbar,” he opened fire again-this time aiming at both the police officers and the ambulance crew who were tending to the wounded man.

Chaos erupted as police returned fire, critically wounding the attacker. He was later taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition. According to sources, the shooter’s name is of Muslim origin, though law enforcement has yet to release specific details. Despite the clearly religious overtones and the timing, which came at the close of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, Chicago police have made no mention of the victim’s Jewish identity, nor have they suggested any potential motive.

The Jewish community and activists are now demanding answers. As outrage grows over what they view as police indifference to an attack targeting Jews, pressure mounts on officials to confront the terroristic nature of the incident. Activists are demanding transparency and a clear motive behind the senseless shooting, which has left the community rattled and searching for answers.
