Jewish freshmen attending a Baruch College welcome event were subjected to vicious harassment by anti-Israel protesters this past week.

A viral video shows new students attending Hillel’s welcome dinner at Mr. Broadway, a kosher restaurant in Midtown, when they were confronted by a mob of about a dozen protesters. Wearing keffiyeh scarves to cover their faces, the mob chanted threatening slogans including “You ain’t going home tonight,” “All Zionists are racists,” and “CUNY, CUNY, you can’t hide, you support genocide.” They also targeted Hillel’s executive director, chanting, “Ilya Bratman, what do you say? How many kids did you kill today?”

“Where’s Hersh, you ugly a– b—h? Go bring them home,” another taunted, referring to Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of the six hostages killed by Hamas last week.

CUNY Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez condemned the incident, saying he was “deeply disappointed” and that the university system is investigating.

“I was deeply disappointed to learn demonstrators disrupted a Hillel welcome dinner for students from CUNY and universities across the City, turning an event designed to help freshmen acclimate to college life into a disruptive hate-filled display that has no place in our city,” Rodriguez said.

Baruch Students for Justice in Palestine helped organize the protest. Since Oct. 7, the antisemitic “activist” group has called for CUNY to cut ties with Hillel International, which has 850 campus chapters across the United States.

NYPD were eventually called in to disperse the protest with no arrests made.

I am a student involved with this Hille, I wanted to say thank you for spreading awareness of our struggle on campus. I wanted to add some info: This Hillel(Hillel of Baruch) is in charge of multiple CUNY campuses and or small campuses throughout Manhattan(John Jay, Baruch, CCNY, SVA, Fordham, Pace, NYIT, New School, and FIT), with Baruch being the founder of this coalition. At this opening event, there were students from other campuses also. This includes the protesters, as many SJP/Arab clubs from the above schools posted on their Instagram accounts that they were joining a protest against Hillel at the Baruch a day or so prior, from there a lot of these protesters stalked Jewish students to the event which led to this protest. Many of our Hillels have been fighting and begging for the past 11 months that our school administrations do something on each of these campuses and met with deaf ears. Each time we have been told it will go away until whether this horrible storm. I hope that any future protests or anti-Israel attacks on the campus to get more coverage from the sites as we need help with pressuring the administrations of these campuses to do more.

Please stop calling them protestors. They are a blatant hate group harassing and intimidating Jewish students becasue they are Jewish. They sought out a Jewish student organization and identified their target event in order to intimidate scare harass and torment Jewish students starting college. Nothing about this is a political demonstration and we need to demand that they are called out for what they are.
