A Jewish advocacy powerhouse is betting big on turning out the vote in a state that could make or break the 2024 presidential race.
Pennsylvania Unites, a new initiative by the Orthodox Union, officially launched its general-election effort on Monday from its field office in Lower Merion Township. With a budget of $250,000, two dedicated staffers and numerous volunteers, the group aims to shore up the Jewish vote in Pennsylvania while combating rising antisemitism in America.
Political analaysts predict Pennsylvania to be the kingmaker state in this year’s election, making the timing of the OU’s “get out the vote” to support the fight against antisemtitism even that more important regardless fo party affialtion.
“Politicians are going to see that this is a community that votes and votes at a super-majority rate, and punches above their weight,” said OU director Maury Litwack. “They’ll say to themselves, ‘OK, this is a group that I have to pay attention to.’”
With antisemitism spiking and the Israel-Gaza conflict dominating headlines, Jewish voters are finding themselves in a political pressure cooker. Democrats have long counted on Jewish support, but Donald Trump and the GOP are making a hard play for those votes, backed by four years of unprecedented support for Israel during his time in the Oval Office.
During Tuesday’s debate, Trump suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris might yield to the Democratic Party’s left wing base and claimed she “hates Israel.” In response, Harris vehemently denied Trump’s accusations, describing herself as a lifelong supporter of the Jewish State.
Harris finds herself in a delicate political balancing act with less than two months to election day. She must reassure Jewish voters of her unwavering support for Israel, while facing pressure from a growing faction within the Democratic Party, including Arab American and Muslim communities in Michigan, who advocate for a tougher policy towards America’s closest ally.
Much like her boss, Harris has taken a balanced approach by reaffirming her commitment to Israel’s right to self-defense while also pushing for an end to the war. It remains to be seen if those positions will change as Hamas continues to sabotage ceasefire negotiations.
