0 commentsThe Knesset pushed off a much-favored vote on Thursday that would approve a law allowing the government to close the Israeli-based offices of Al Jazeera.
Last month, the Knesset passed a law which would grant the Israeli government temporary authority to shut down foreign broadcasts in Israel if the security services deem them a threat to national security. According to Ynet, the vote was postponed in an effort to avoid jeopardizing ongoing negotiations for a hostage release with Hamas.
Join the JBN+ WhatsApp GroupAt the time, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “immediately” enforce the law, accusing Al Jazeera of “aiding Hamas terrorists” in the deadly attack on October 7. However, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) appealed to the Supreme Court, contending that the law violated freedom of speech and was unconstitutional. The government requested a two-week postponement of the ruling, which the court granted on May 1.
In response, ACRI demanded that the court issue an interim order prohibiting the government from proceeding with the law’s implementation, claiming that the government had acted in “bad faith.” Any decision to close the pro-Hamas news agency would only be valid for 45 days, with the possibility of re-approval after that period, according to the report.
