Just four years ago, Morocco signed a historic normalization agreement with Israel at the White House as part of the Abraham Accords. However, with much of the Arab world condemning Israel’s defensive war in Gaza following Hamas’ October 7 massacre, it seems like the kingdom may be considering reversing course.

According to AFP, thousands took to the streets of Rabat on Sunday to protest Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza. Comprised of leftist parties and Islamist organizations, protesters chanted slogans such as “Gaza is not alone” and demanded that Morocco immediately sever ties with the Jewish State.

Moroccan demonstrators were allegedly triggered by reports last month of an Israeli ship docking in Tangier port on June 19, after making a pit stop on its way from the United States. In an apparent attempt to address public concerns, the government announced that Israel has violated international law and that 40 tons of medical aid are en route to Gaza.

Still, Morocco has not yet given any indication that it intends to undo its normalization agreement with Israel. Under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, the kingdom established diplomatic ties with Israel in late 2020, alongside the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. In return, the US recognized Morocco’s claim to sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on Oct. 7 claimed the lives of over 1,200 people. Of the original 250 hostages taken back into the hellhole of Gaza, 116 still remain, including 42 Israel’s military say are dead.

For Hamas, there are some signs of growing despair over the now nine-month war, and pressure to accept a ceasefire agreement has been mounting from international mediators whose patience has grown thin with the Iranian-backed terror organization.

As a Moroccan allow me to apologize for these ignorants and born haters. Moroccan Jews are part of our heritage. Israelis are our brothers and sisters
These demonstrations do not reflect the love educated Moroccans have for Jews.
And personally I am not worried it will ever affect the relationship between our countries and governments. God bless you all
