A handful of anti-Israel protesters unsuccessfully tried to disrupt the Art Basel Miami Beach fair on Saturday, marking the second year radical activists have targeted one of America’s most lucrative art shows.

During the protest, which mustered only 30-50 participants, a 50-foot banner reading “Let Palestine Live” was unfurled. Organized by local chapters of Jewish Voice for Peace and Justice for Palestine, they demanded the fair be cancelled until the city abandons its investment in Israel Bonds. Palm Beach County holds over $700 million in Israel Bonds, while Miami-Dade County maintains $76 million as of October.

“Miami is a very working-class city, where a lot of people, primarily immigrants, work for relatively low wages with high costs of living while the rich fly in to purchase art and stay in luxury hotels and then leave,” protestor Zaina Alsous told Hyperallergic. “I think any time we have a moment where a lot of wealthy people are using Miami for recreation, we have a responsibility to uplift and puncture that space with the reality of what is happening in the world.”

By 2 p.m., Miami Beach police had deployed approximately ten officers to maintain order and restrict protesters from accessing key areas of the convention center. Within an hour, authorities had relocated the entire group across the street from the main entrance. Police also ordered the pro-Hamas supporters to remove the banner’s support poles, citing municipal regulations on permissible dimensions.

Earlier in the week, an anti-Israel demonstration was held at the “Great Elephant Migration” installation, a public art display designed by Shubhra Nayar in the mid-Beach area. The nearby suburb of Bal Harbor stands as the first city in the nation to pass an ordinance against the Boycott, Divest and Sanction movement.
