The University of Michigan’s Central Student Government (CSG) approved articles of impeachment against its president and vice president on Tuesday after the pair incited violence against Jewish students.

CSG president Alifa Chowdhury and vice president Elias Atkinson swept into office last spring on an aggressive anti-Israel platform called “Shut It Down.” The pair had attempted to hold numerous campus services hostage until the university agreed to divest from Israel, including a campus food pantry, LSAT preparation services, and airport transportation.

Chowdhury and Atkinson also called for anti-Israel protesters to target what they termed “Zionist members of CSG” who they claimed were attempting to “punish Gaza.” Their inflammatory rhetoric, declaring they “welcome this fight” and calling for supporters to “join us,” directly preceded chaos at an October 8 CSG assembly. Afterwards, Chowdhury seized control of the CSG’s Instagram account without permission to post messages praising the anti-Israel agitators.

According to the impeachment articles, their calls for action “encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — lawless action” when anti-Israel protesters stormed the assembly floor, “menaced Members of the Assembly and CSG personnel, and engaged in other violent and destructive acts.”

The University of Michigan has been a hotbed for campus antisemitism following the Hamas massacre against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. In June, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights launched an investigation that revealed the school’s failure to comply with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, identifying 75 harassment complaints against Jewish students that the university largely ignored.

Among the uninvestigated incidents were demonstrations featuring chants about “Nazi liberation” and a particularly egregious case where a 19-year-old male student was thrown to the ground, kicked, and spat on.

Michigan’s Jewish student population represents one of the largest at any public university in America, with roughly 6,500 students, according to the University’s Hillel chapter. The community includes 5,000 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students.

Good for them! I honor their courage and determination to protect Jews on their campus from terrorists and their sympathizers!

Hopefully other student bodies will do the same since the faculty and administrators refuse to do so!

Why is this NOT A CRIME?

Let’s hope Donald Trump will make it a crime, earning severe punishment. That will deter repeat performances of this filthy, monstrous behaviour.
