Microsoft’s AI-based image creation tool removes Israel from the map when tasked with generating a geographical depiction of ‘Palestine,’ a review by the Washington Free Beacon found.
The incident came to light when the Free Beacon requested Microsoft Copilot to generate a map of ‘Palestine’, resulting in images that labeled the entire state of Israel as Palestine, complete with the Palestinian flag. When prompted for a map of Israel, the tool accurately displayed the nation’s current geographical boundaries, including its division from Judea and Samaria.

An “Israel octopus” prompt produced images reminiscent of classic anti-Semitic tropes, featuring octopuses draped in the Israeli flag encircling the globe with their tentacles. A request for images of “Elsa in Palestine” depicted the Disney princess wearing a keffiyeh, a symbol often associated with Arab terrorists.
In response to these depictions, a Microsoft spokesperson assured that the company is actively working to rectify the issue.
“When these reports surface, we take the appropriate steps to address them. We continue to incorporate user feedback and put additional controls in place to help our system detect and stop prompts that could lead to the creation of harmful content,” said the spokesperson.
“We have large teams working on the development of guardrails and other safety systems in line with our responsible AI principles to help create a safer environment, and remain committed to making it a positive and helpful experience for users.”
