A mural honoring Holocaust survivors in Milan has become the latest target in a disturbing wave of antisemitic vandalism sweeping through Italy.

Created by Italian contemporary pop artist AleXsandro Palombo, the mural depicts Holocaust survivors Liliana Segre, Sami Modiano, and Edith Bruck as characters from “The Simpsons.”

Algemeiner reports that vandals defaced the artwork with a swastika and spray-painted “Israeliani Nazis” above the survivors’ heads. They also equated the Star of David with a Nazi swastika and painted over the face of Pope Francis, who appears in the mural holding a sign reading “Antisemitism is everywhere.”

“In Milan, people protest the war in Gaza with vandalism throughout the city, shouting every possible antisemitic insult and even defacing a pop artwork that honors three of the last great Holocaust witnesses and symbols of peace,” Palombo responded to the vandalism on X.

Over his three-decade career, Palombo has created numerous works addressing antisemitism and honoring Holocaust victims. His portfolio includes “Simpsons Go to Auschwitz” at Milan’s Holocaust Memorial and a mural of Nova music festival survivor Vlada Patapov that was later defaced at the University of Milan when vandals symbolically “decapitated” Patapov’s image.

Earlier this month, another of Palombo’s murals titled “The Star of David” featuring Bruck was inaugurated after being restored from a January vandalism.

“Antisemitism is spreading in Milan,” warned Minister for Regional Affairs of Italy Roberto Calderoli. “Just four months ago, I was appalled by the repeated defacement and removal of a mural dedicated to Segre and Modiano. Today I am further horrified by this latest act of defacement with the words ‘Israeli Nazis’ — targeting yet another mural by AleXsandro Palombo.”
