“I Ask the United Nations: Where Is My Son?”—Mother of Kidnapped Israeli Confronts UN Over Its Role in Hamas Terrorism
In a searing address to the United Nations, Ayelet Samerano, the mother of 21-year-old Yonatan Samerano, issued a direct challenge to the world body over its complicity in the October 7th Hamas terror attack. Speaking before the UN Human Rights Council, she laid bare the horrifying truth: her son was shot, abducted, and is still being held captive in Gaza—by a social worker employed by UNRWA.

Samerano’s powerful testimony was prompted by the UN’s Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, who recently issued a report claiming that “UNRWA is under attack.” Her response was swift and damning.
“No, UNRWA Is Not Under Attack. UNRWA Is the Attacker.”
“Mr. Rapporteur, in your report, you claim the reputation of UNRWA is ’under attack,’” Samerano said, her voice filled with grief and fury.
“I speak today as a mother. My son, Yonatan, 21 years old, was shot on October 7th. Then an UNRWA social worker kidnapped him. Right now, Yonatan is still held by terrorists in Gaza.”

She then exposed the heinous actions of Mohammad Abu Ittiwi, the UNRWA employee who, rather than providing humanitarian aid, acted as a Hamas operative, seizing her injured son and delivering him to his captors.
“So I know what an attack is. An attack is when terrorists, including UNRWA employees like Mohammad Abu Ittiwi, enter a music festival and murder innocent, young people.”
“An attack is when a UN SOCIAL WORKER, paid by this organization, kidnaps my son into Gaza. A person who took upon himself to do good—yet did evil.”

Samerano’s words resonated across the chamber, cutting through the usual diplomatic platitudes that have shielded UNRWA from scrutiny. Her plea was simple yet devastating: Where is her son?
A Pattern of UNRWA Terror Ties
Her testimony comes amid mounting evidence that UNRWA employees actively participated in Hamas’s October 7th massacre, in which 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered, and over 250 were taken hostage. Investigations have shown that at least 12 UNRWA staffers took direct part in the attack, including killing civilians and abducting hostages.
The revelations have led multiple nations, including the United States, the UK, Canada, and Germany, to suspend funding to UNRWA, citing its infiltration by Hamas. However, the United Nations has continued to defend the agency, insisting that its humanitarian mission should not be undermined.
But for Samerano, and for the families of other hostages still languishing in Hamas captivity, the UN’s defense of UNRWA is an insult.
The Question That the UN Refuses to Answer
As Samerano’s time at the podium ran out, she delivered one final, searing indictment of the world body:
“I ask the United Nations: Where is my son?”
The chamber fell silent.
The UN’s response? None. No official from the UN Human Rights Council, nor from UNRWA, has addressed her question.

For Ayelet Samerano, and for so many other families of hostages, the silence is deafening—and the world is watching.
