With tensions in the Middle East reaching a fever pitch, air travel to and from Israel has come to a virtual standstill.
Although most airlines eventually resumed operations following Hamas’ massacre on October 7, the very real possibility of Iran imminently striking Israel over the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has caused massive cancellations.
As of Saturday, the list of carriers suspending operations to Tel Aviv continued to grow. Major American airlines including United, Delta, and Air India have halted flights through early to mid-August. European aviation giants are following suit, with Lufthansa Group canceling flights until August 9th and KLM extending its suspension all the way to October 26th.
Spanish carriers Iberia Express, Air Europa, and Vueling have temporarily suspended their routes. Greek airline Aegean, Polish LOT, Hungarian Wizz Air, and even Fly Dubai have all pulled their Tel Aviv-bound flights from the schedule. Late reports indicate that Ethiopian Airlines has now joined this growing list.
For those still determined to make the journey, social media users suggest a roundabout approach, such as flying to Greece or Cyprus, from where connections to Israel may still be possible.
According to local media reports, an estimated 100,000 Israeli citizens find themselves stranded abroad. In response, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has launched an online assistance form, however flights are not guaranteed by submitting the form.
Still, not all hope is lost for those seeking to reach Israeli shores as El Al continues to operate. Israel’s flag carrier has not only maintained its regular schedule but is reportedly adding flights to aid in repatriation efforts.
