A French court has sentenced a neo-Nazi to two years in prison for plotting to target the Paris Olympic Games.

The 19-year-old reportedly ran a Telegram group called “French Aryan division.” He was charged on Friday after sharing bomb-making instructions, posting death threats, and endangering others by sharing their personal information.

While the suspect’s Telegram posts did not explicitly mention the Olympics, French officials chose to err on the side of caution rather than wait for a massive tragedy to unfold.

“We know that he had a desire to hit political targets or people with immigrant backgrounds,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said, adding that the suspect showed a “willingness to intervene during a stage, evidently, of the Olympic torch relay.”

As Paris prepares for its first Olympic Games in a century, security measures remain a top priority to ensure the safety of athletes, spectators, and the city itself. Approximately 45,000 police along with 10,000 soldiers have been deployed already to secure the games.

Police Chief Laurent Nunez expects the main threat will come from radical Arabs.

“Islamist terrorism remains our main concern. The terrorist threat remains just as important as the protest threat posed by radical environmental groups, the ultra-left and the pro-Palestinian movement,” Nunez said.

“There is no clear-cut threat yet against the Games and our country, but I’d like to remind you that at the end of May, two individuals were arrested in Saint-Etienne and were plotting a project aimed directly at the Olympic Games.”

The Olympic torch is currently on a months-long journey through France and its overseas territories, leading up to the opening ceremony along the Seine River this Friday.
