Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found himself in the hot seat Thursday as he met with both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The day kicked off with Netanyahu meeting Biden in the Oval Office where the two longtime politicians engaged in their familiar relationship.
“From a proud Jewish Zionist to a proud Irish American Zionist, I want to thank you for 50 years of public service and 50 years of support for the state of Israel. And I look forward to discussing with you today and working with you in the months ahead on the great issues before us,” Netanyahu told Biden.
In response, Biden reflected on their first meeting by joking, “I was only 12 then.”
However, pleasantries quickly gave way to realpolitik. Biden, now in his political twilight after bowing out of the 2024 race, seemed eager to notch a foreign policy win. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby hinted at the administration’s urgency, telling reporters that Biden would push Netanyahu to “close the gaps” on a peace deal with Hamas.
The 90-minute meeting also included a moment with American families of Israeli hostages, who emerged cautiously optimistic about a potential breakthrough.
Separately, Netanyahu met with Harris, who has been more vocal than her boss about Israel’s defensive war in Gaza. With an eye toward her own presidential ambitions, Harris didn’t mince words as she painted a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent,” Harris said following the meeting.
“With over 2 million people facing high levels of food insecurity, and half a million people facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity, what has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating. The images of dead children and desperate, hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third, or fourth time.”
Perhaps Israel’s Prime Minister will find stronger support on the other side of the political aisle as he prepares to meet with Republican Nominee Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Friday. During his tenure as president, Trump had been Israel’s staunchest supporter by doing everything in his power to protect and legitimize Israel’s right to exist.
