Disturbing new details regarding an assassination plot against high-profile US political figures have come to light.
Asif Merchant, a Pakistani man who frequently traveled to Iran, was arrested in July on charges of murder for hire. Upon his arrival in the US, he allegedly reached out to an individual he believed could assist in orchestrating an assassination plot. This contact, however, alerted authorities to Merchant’s deadly intentions, according to the NY Post.
In the weeks that followed, Merchant engaged in discussions with an undercover FBI agent posing as a hitman. During their meeting, the two reportedly discussed the advantages of indoor versus outdoor assassination attempts.
However, Merchant believed that both options had only a 50% chance of success due to security measures. The 46-year-old had the agent draw a diagram to demonstrate how an assassination could be conducted. It included a rectangle representing an area where a crowd would gather, with a small box representing a podium where the target would be standing.
When Merchant was asked who the target was, the agent was allegedly told that it could be Donald Trump, Joe Biden, or Nikki Haley. He also provided detailed information about one of Trump’s rallies, including the number of cameras present, security guard details, and motorcade size.
“Bad actors are determined to wreak havoc on our country, and American political leaders across both parties are sitting squarely in the crosshairs,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley.
“In this extraordinarily heightened threat environment, federal agencies ought to be laser-focused on building up public trust and reassuring the American people of their efforts to carry out their protective missions.”
Merchant also signaled to his handler that he wanted to take revenge for Trump’s killing of top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
