In his first major interview, Israel’s new ambassador Daniel Meron wasted no time delivering a scathing rebuke to the United Nations.
“We feel that the UN has betrayed Israel,” Meron bluntly told AFP. “We don’t have any trust anymore in the UN.”
October 7 turned the tables completely on the international stage as it triggered Israel’s fierce response in Gaza and lit the fuse on a potential war with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Various UN bodies and officials have been throwing around heavy accusations against Israel, claiming it’s gone overboard in Gaza.
Haphazardly, they toss out libelous terms like “war crimes” and “genocide.” But Meron, who just stepped into his role as Israel’s UN representative in Geneva this past July, isn’t having it.
“The UN has betrayed Israel and at the worst time, the worst event that has happened to the State of Israel since its inception in 1948,” Meron said, adding that Hamas’ brutal actions haven’t faced nearly the same level of criticism.
“Where was the world for 12 months?” Meron continued, saying the Iran-backed terror group and Jewish State have been locked in near-daily exchanges, preventing 70,000 displaced Israelis from returning to their homes in the north.
“We have been restrained now for 12 months, but life in the north of Israel has to go back to what it was,” he said.
Considering the characters the UN allows to speak in the once respected halls of the General Assembly, Israel’s ambassador might have a point.
Take for example Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who began his address on Thursday by declaring three times, “We will not leave,” adding, “Palestine is our homeland. It is the land of our fathers, our grandfathers. It will remain ours, and if anyone were to leave, it would be the occupying usurpers.”
Abbas, known for his “pay-for-slay” policy that rewards families of terrorists, called for the international community to stop sending Israel support. Without so much as a nod to the Hamas attack that sparked the current conflict in the first place, he accused Israel of waging a “full-scale war of genocide.” Unsurprisingly, the 88-year-old also claimed that the Temple Mount is the exclusive property of Arabs.
He should be next on Israel’s hit list.
